The Mail November 16, 2006

Dear Friends, At 10:15pm the pile of mail on my desk is still daunting enough to know that I will probably not go back to my apartment on Capitol Hill until after the garage doors are locked at 11pm. I prefer to work late in Washington. It is quiet at this hour and I can work uninterrupted. This week of the "rump" session is consumed with finishing the work of the 109th Congress, orienting new members and conducting leadership elections. The office lottery is part of this biennial drill and it`s kind of fun. Offices are chosen by seniority. We`ve kept the same spaces for three Congresses now. My current office has a south facing window to get whatever weak light the east coast sky offers -- a real draw for me. It`s far from the floor of the House, but I have never minded the walk. But with pretty substantial seniority now and a premium on space for staff, we will be moving to new digs for the next Congress. We`ll stay in the historic Cannon Building, but will have a slightly larger office that looks out toward the Capitol and the Library of Congress. If you are coming for a visit, we will be in 442 Cannon starting in January. Training of new members is also a part of this week. I`ve been asked to teach new members about how to give knock-your-sox-off constituent service. I taught the same subject to new members in the last Congress as well. Excellent constituent service is a hallmark of the First District of New Mexico. It has been since Manuel Lujan set the gold standard, and Steve Schiff carried it on. Which gets back to the mail on my desk. Back to work. Wish you were here,
