Amidst the chocolates, cards, and flowers this week is a special group of people who deserve some recognition.
The week of February 14 each year is our opportunity to say thank you to a special group of men and women: the more than 98,000 veterans of the U.S. armed services who are cared for every day in Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers, outpatient clinics, domiciliaries, and nursing homes.
In the United States of America, where freedom is valued so dear, it is important that we show those who fought for our freedom that they are held just as dear.
The purpose of the National Salute To Hospitalized Veterans Program is to:
pay tribute and express appreciation to hospitalized veterans;
increase community awareness of the role of the VA medical center;
encourage citizens to visit hospitalized veterans and to become involved as volunteers
NEW FRIENDS
Congresswoman Heather Wilson did her part to show her appreciation this Monday at the Albuquerque Veteran’s Medical Center. Heather joined a group of fifty 6th graders from the 21st Century Charter School and walked the corridors of the hospital to spread a little Valentine’s Day joy. The kids, with Heather in tow, passed out hand-made calendars, cards, and Valentine’s kisses to New Mexico veterans.
The kids showed no sign of nervousness at making new friends and were met with friendly smiles and appreciation by the men and women they had prepared valentines for. Gruff men turned into teddy bears as the children chatted excitedly with them.
