Wilson Votes to Provide Assistance to Help Low-Income Families Pay Their Energy Bill June 20, 2001

Emergency Appropriation Bill will also provide Sandia National Labs with $22.7 million

WASHINGTON, DC –Congresswoman Heather Wilson today voted to provide much needed assistance to low income families in New Mexico that are struggling to pay their energy bills. The FY 2001 Supplemental Appropriations Act (HR 2216) included $300 million in emergency funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) that Wilson had lobbied the House leadership to include.

“This program has assisted many New Mexicans with the soaring costs of energy for heating and cooling their homes,” Wilson said. “Many senior citizens, disabled individuals and families live on an extremely tight budget. They cannot cope with the sudden spike in energy costs that we have been experiencing over the last year. They rely on the help this program provides and I am very happy we were able to include this critical funding.”

LIHEAP helps low-income households across the nation by providing money to help pay for heating and air conditioning costs. LIHEAP reaches more than four million households nation wide every year. Nearly three-quarters of the households receiving LIHEAP benefits have incomes of less than $8,000.

HR 2216 also adds an additional $22.775 million to this years budget for Sandia National Laboratories. The funding will go to fulfill commitments within existing weapons programs and to further research and development of the stockpile stewardship programs.

“The supplemental funding will allow Sandia National Laboratories to meet their program commitments in ensuring and certifying the integrity of our nuclear deterrence. This work is critical to the security of our nation,” said Wilson “Sandia National Laboratories is a critical piece of New Mexico and of our national defense structure and we must ensure that they have the funding they need to carry out their mission. It’s important that we continue to take advantage of our world class laboratories and the talent within them to ensure the security of our country and solve important problems facing our society in the twenty-first century."
