Funds to go toward warehouse expansion

Congressman Jack Kingston (R/GA-1) today announced that Second Harvest Food Bank will receive $220,500 in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.  The funding, which Congressman Kingston secured in the appropriations process, will go toward the expansion of Second Harvest’s warehouse.

“We were able to secure this funding because of the great work being done by Frank Richards and the folks at Second Harvest Food Bank,” Congressman Kingston said.  “With Georgia’s unemployment rate at 7%, charitable organizations like the food bank play a bigger role than ever.  This funding will help them expand their operation to reach out to even more people in and around Lowndes County.”

Farmers now eligible for aid consideration

Congressman Jack Kingston (R/GA-1) today announced that farmers affected by this year’s drought may now be eligible for assistance from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

“This drought has hit hard and now farmers are eligible for much needed assistance,” said Congressman Kingston.  “While we’ve had a good deal of rain lately, the beginning of the year was very tough for a lot of us.  I encourage anyone eligible for these loans to contact their local FSA office for assistance”

Congressman Jack Kingston (R/GA-1) today voted against a $14 billion loan program created to bailout the “Big Three” automakers.  While he noted significant progress from the original $34 billion proposal, Congressman Kingston expressed concerns with the potential to nationalize an industry, failure to address the out of sync wages of autoworkers and Washington’s bailout spending spree.

“While American families are tightening their belts, Washington’s running to the printing press and borrowing from China,” Congressman Kingston said.  “So far this year, Washington’s poured more than $3.2 trillion into bailing out the economy, the national debt has risen to $11.3 trillion and all we’ve got to show for it are spotty results.  This is all deficit spending and it’s got to stop.”

The text of the auto bailout legislation is available here.

The House Rules Committee has announced that it intends to meet at 12:45 today to create the rule under which the auto bailout bill will be considered on the House floor.

This is usually the first time a bill like this becomes available.  When the full text is made available, we’ll share it with you.

Roll Call reports:

The Senate will not vote Wednesday on an automaker bailout bill as Democrats had hoped, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said on the floor.

Reid acknowledged that Senate Republicans, whose support has been soft to nonexistent for an auto package, need time to review the measure after legislative language has been finalized. He said he hoped he would be able to give his GOP colleagues a copy of the measure within the hour.

At an event on River Street in Downtown Savannah yesterday, the city unveiled the nation’s first bio-diesel street car and several other new bio fuels own by the city.

The vehicles are fueled by bio-diesel created by a local company which collects used vegetable oil from restaurants on River Street and around Savannah.

Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA/01) announces that 16 students in the First Congressional District of Georgia have received nominations to United States service academies.  The students were interviewed for consideration into the Class of 2013 by Congressman Kingston’s Military Academy Board.   Interviews were conducted at the Inn at Blueberry Plantation in Alma on November 24, 2008.

Congratulations to the Valdosta-Lowndes Industrial Authority, Douglas-Coffee County Industrial Authority, and the cities of Glenwood and Folkston who were announced as OneGeorgia grant recipients by Governor Sonny Perdue today.  From the governor’s announcement:

Governor Announces over $13.4 million in OneGeorgia Awards

Governor Sonny Perdue and members of the OneGeorgia Authority Board today visited North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega and approved grants and loans from the OneGeorgia Authority’s portfolio of financing programs including EDGE, SILF, Equity, AIRGeorgia, BRIDGE and ESB.

These awards will assist with a variety of economic development projects in rural Georgia aimed at creating jobs, stimulating new private investment, supporting the retention of existing jobs and enhancing regional competitiveness through capacity-building projects. These projects, along with their respective local leadership representatives, were recognized at the OneGeorgia board meeting.
