Conserving Fuel & Saving Money on Gas April 18, 2008

With the summer travel season upon us, here are some steps you can take to conserve fuel and save on gas:

• Do not accelerate rapidly - these quick starts can waste fuel.
• Drive more slowly. Cruising at 75 mph uses about 20% more gas than when driving at 55 mph.
• Don’t carry extra unnecessary weight in your trunk. An extra 125 pounds in your trunk can reduce efficiency by 1 mile per gallon in stop and go traffic.
• Take the roof racks off your car when not in use. They add air resistance.
• Use cruise control on open roads.
• If you expect to stop for a minute or two, shut off your engine.
• Don’t use or premium grade gasoline unless specified for your engine requires it. Most newer cars can run on regular grade gasoline.

"We need a balanced, long-term energy policy that makes America less dependent on foreign sources of oil.  That means energy production here at home, conservation, and research into game-changing technologies."

- Congresswoman Heather Wilson

Properly maintaining your car will make sure you are getting
the maximum number of miles per gallon of gas.  Here are
some tips for maintenance:

• Keep your engine properly tuned.
• Replace air and fuel filters regularly.
• Use advanced conventional or synthetic motor oils
which can reduce fuel consumption by 1 to 2%.
• Keep tires properly inflated and wheels aligned. Check
  your tire pressure weekly.
• Keep track of your gas mileage. This is best indicator
for when you need to get a tuneup.
