Leesburg will use federal money on trail design

LEESBURG -- Leesburg [Florida] will spend more than $260,000 in federal grant money to design a bicycle trail from the city to Wildwood.

City commissioners were less hesitant to spend the grant money after learning that using it meant no obligation to actually construct the trail at a later time. It was better to use the money and plan the trail now than to try for a grant later after turning down federal money due to a lack of follow-through funding, said commissioner Bill Polk.

The proposed trail would run along an abandoned railroad right-of-way from U.S. Highway 27 to Willow Brook Lane and connect to 13th Street west of U.S. 27 near Griffin Road.

Commissioner Lewis Puckett said it would be better if the city could get funding to repair many of the damaged streets within the city limits rather than pursuing a "pie-in-the-sky" project such as a bike trail.
