Funds available for celebration

Albany Times Union (New York)

November 21, 2008

A total of $50,000 is available in matching federal funds to Hudson Valley communities to develop programs and events that focus on 400 years of New York history to be celebrated during next year's Quadricentennial.

In 2009, New York State, along with Vermont and Quebec, will commemorate the 400th anniversaries of Henry Hudson's sail up the Hudson River and Samuel de Champlain's exploration of Lake Champlain, as well as the 200th anniversary of Robert Fulton's first successful commercial steamship operation on the Hudson River.

Applications can be requested by calling (518) 473-3835, by e-mailing the Hudson River Valley Greenway at hrvg@hudsongreenway.state.ny.us or by downloading at www.hudsongreenway.state.ny.us . All applications must be delivered by Dec. 15.

Funding for this grant program was allocated by the National Park Service and is part of $492,000 secured by Rep. Maurice Hinchey for Quadricentennial programs and events. This grant program is intended to provide seed money to organizations for Hudson Valley projects, programs, and events tied to the Quadricentennial. Projects must encourage participation by communities or nonprofits, contain elements that support a lasting presence, and seek opportunities to associate with other Quadricentennial celebration events.

The Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area program was established by Congress in 1996 and is funded through the National Park Service and Department of the Interior. The mission of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area is to recognize, preserve, protect and interpret the nationally significant cultural and natural resources of the Hudson River Valley for the benefit of the Nation. The Hudson River Valley Greenway is the management entity for the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area.
