No pet projects in next budget, lawmakers told

TALLAHASSEE — Legislative leaders have axed "turkeys" from Florida's next state budget.

That's what earmarks, or lawmakers' local projects, are called in Tallahassee. Officially they're "community budget issue requests."

A week and a day before Thanksgiving, House Speaker Ray Sansom and Senate President Jeff Atwater on Wednesday informed their members they'll be getting no turkeys due to the state's dire financial straits.
