More depot work to be done

Minot Daily News (North Dakota)

November 19, 2008

The exterior of Minot's Amtrak depot has indeed been transformed after years of work.

The cost of restoring the exterior of the building came to nearly $440,000, with $290,000 coming from a federal Department of Transportation grant. The city of Minot provided the rest of the funding. Now supporters of the project want to remodel the building's interior. But as with the exterior, the major obstacle will once again be the cost, which will depend on how much work supporters want to have done.

In a perfect world, the interior of the depot would be restored to its original 1905 appearance. But that's likely not realistic. Still, supporters of the renovation project hope they can at least bring some of the atmosphere from the building's original days back. That would be a good thing, and would continue the work already done to the building's exterior.

The project's backers and the city deserve praise for their work in getting the outside renovation work completed. We were confident the job would get done, and it did. Now, there's more work to be done. Again, we have faith that the project's supporters will find a way to accomplish their goal. We wish them well in their efforts.
