Statement of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on Libya's Final Compensation Payment to Pan Am 103 Families

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton made the following statement after Libya completed its final payment of the $1.5 billion compensation package for American victims of the Pan Am 103 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland.

“For too many years the families of the victims of the terrorist attack on Pan Am 103 have waited for justice. The passage of time has not dimmed our memories of that tragic day or of the friends and loved ones whose lives were brutally cut short. Nothing will ever replace those who were taken too soon. But I am pleased that the Libyan government has finally fulfilled its obligations under the compensation agreement and provided the families of the Pan Am victims with some small measure of justice. My thoughts and prayers are with them.”

Senator Clinton has been a committed advocate for the families of the Pan Am 103 victims. Last year, Senator Clinton joined Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and several other colleagues in urging the State Department to press Libya to fulfill its obligations to the Pan Am families. Last month Senator Clinton paid tribute to the memory of the 35 Syracuse students who lost their lives in the bombing as part of the University's annual Remembrance Week. Thirty-five students participating in the University’s study abroad programs in London and Florence, Italy, were among the 270 individuals who died when Pan Am flight 103 exploded over the skies of Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988.
