On October 21st, Senator Coleman presented Sgt. Ted Knutson, a veteran of the Vietnam War, with the Purple Heart after Coleman helped secure the medals from the military. Sgt. Knutson, who served in the Marines from 1965-1969, was awarded seven medals for his service, but only received three – all of which were lost. After Sgt. Knutson contacted his office, Coleman’s staff worked with the National Personnel Records Center, eventually helping Knutson receive his medals.

On October 21st, 2005, Sen. Coleman met with William Lee to present him with the Purple Heart on behalf of his father, George Lee Jr., a World War veteran who passed away in 1964. George Lee, who served in the Army Air Force and flew over 50 missions, was awarded the Purple Heart after suffering facial wounds while being shot at over Munich in June of 1944. After William contacted Coleman’s office, the senator’s casework staff worked with him to secure the Purple Heart on behalf of his father.

On Friday, October 21st, Senator Coleman met with 5-year-old Minnesotan Fartuun Sheikh and her family in Coleman's St. Paul office. In September, Coleman helped secure Fartuun's return to her family in St. Paul after she was wrongly detained by Kenyan immigration authorities during a trip to visit relatives with her grandmother.

On October 20, Minnesota native Benson K. Whitney appeared before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations regarding his nomination to be the next United States Ambassador to Norway. Once confirmed, Whitney’s duties will include overseeing the Embassy and managing economic, consular and immigration issues, as well as political and military relations with Norway.
