Ashley Smith, former hostage of Brian Nichols who escaped during the Atlanta Court shooting in March of 2005, spoke candidly about her addiction to meth. She assertsed that her hostage ordeal awakened her to the fact that she was an addict and has not used drugs .

To address the increasing dangers Methamphetamines exact on our nation’s communities and families, Senators Norm Coleman (R-MN), Conrad Burns (R-MT), and Max Baucus (D-MT), Mark Pryor (D - AR), and Craig Thomas (R-WY) hosted a National Town Hall on Meth Awareness and Prevention, on January 23, 2006. Senators were joined by Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez and Drug Czar John Walters of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, along with state and national panelists, including drug enforcement officials, rehabilitative services personnel, and former users of meth. The Town Hall was broadcasted live from Washington via satellite to a number of Minnesota locations across the state.
