Education and Labor Committee

Congressman Grijalva serves on the House Education and Labor Committee, which has jurisdiction over legislation addressing higher education, elementary and secondary schools, Head Start,  juvenile justice, community service programs, pensions, minimum wage and workers’ rights. During his tenure on the Committee, the Congressman has worked to pass legislation that cut the student loan interest rate in half, strengthened pre-k education for our nation’s neediest families, increased the minimum wage for the first time in ten years, and renewed a federal investment in student aid.

As a senior member of the Healthy Families and Communities Subcommittee, he has taken the lead on several legislative initiatives such as juvenile justice reentry programs and runaway and homeless youth issues, and considered the impact of our nation’s community service programs on seniors. In his other capacity as a member of the Elementary and Secondary Education Subcommittee, Congressman Grijalva is actively involved in reauthorizing the No Child Left Behind act and has included provisions to the Head Start bill during the last three Congresses.

During the 110th Congress, Congressman Grijalva will advance legislation in both the higher education and elementary and secondary education issue areas. His interest is in equitable college access for all students, including the disabled, socioeconomically disadvantaged and English language learners. He is also focusing on a middle school reform initiative that will be included in the No Child Left Behind Reauthorization.
