Art Students Honored by Congressman Gilchrest in Washington

WASHINGTON -- Art students and their families from across the 1st District of Maryland came to Washington recently for Congressman Wayne T. Gilchrest's annual Arts Caucus competition where the winner gets to have his or her artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year.

The overall winner this year was Michelle McGaughey, a senior at Broadneck Senior High School in Anne Arundel County. Her drawing, entitled  "Sports", won the Best in Show award and she will be invited back to Washington to celebrate at a reception honoring the winners from across the country. Her artwork will also hang in a corridor along with other winners from each Congressional district.

"Her artwork takes me back to my youth," Gilchrest said, of her drawing of various athletic equipment and balls spilling out of a closet door. "She has perfectly depicted what the hall closet looked like at our house, growing up with six boys."

Awards were presented in seven categories: painting, drawing, collage, print, mixed media, computer generated art, and photography and winners came from all across the district from various high schools.

At a reception in the Rayburn House Office Building, Gilchrest thanked the students, their art teachers, and the parents for coming to the reception, and encouraged the students to continue to express themselves through their artistic abilities.  He and his staff then gave the group a guided tour of the Capitol where they were able to see the artwork from last year 's competition, as well as sit in the balcony to watch the House of Representatives in session.
