Issues and Legislation

This legislative session, Congresswoman Johnson has pursued a legislative agenda focused on ensuring fairness and equality for all Americans, empowering small businesses, lifting Americans out of poverty and boosting funding for scientific research and education.

Congresswoman Johnson has introduced the following legislation for the 107th Congress:

  • H.Con.Res.211:
To express the sense of the House of Representatives that the Bush Administration should send a high level delegation to participate in the United Nations World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance.
  • H.Con.Res. 290:
Expressing the sense of the Congress that women throughout the world should join together for a week of workshops, forums, and other events to speak up for world peace.
  • H.R. 886:
To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to exclude unemployment compensation from gross income.  Introduced 03/06/01.
  • H.R. 1113:
To amend the Small Business Act to direct the Administrator of the Small Business  Administration (SBA) to establish an office within the Administration to conduct oversight of certain loan programs and for other purposes.  The SBA acts as a loan guarantor to encourage banks to loan money to businesses in economically depressed areas.  The bill calls for an office within SBA that would ensure that the banks who make loans buttressed by SBA follow the policies SBA mandates with regards to the Community Reinvestment Act which ensure that SBA loans are available to everyone based on fair standards.  These standards are designed to safeguard against bad loans to protect funding sources and allow for more good loans.
  • H.R. 1472:
To authorize appropriations for fiscal years 2002-2005 for the National Science Foundation. The bill would lead to a doubling of funding for the National Science Foundation, which directs a significant amount of federally funded scientific research.> Press Release
  • H.R. 1585:
To provide for a study regarding the proximity of federally assisted housing to hazardous waste sites.  The bill would lead to greater understanding of the extent to which poorer people living in federally subsidized housing are endangered because of hazardous waste nearby.
  • H.R. 1660:
To develop a demonstration program through the National Science Foundation to encourage interest in the fields of mathematics, science and information technology.  The program would promote more effective math, science and technology education.
  • H.R. 1715:
To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 8624 Ferguson Road in Dallas, TX as the "Cesar E. Chavez Post Office Building".
  • H.R.1994:
