Emerson Launches Veterans History Project Effort

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson (MO-08) is calling on residents of the Eighth Congressional District to help preserve the stories of area veterans through a national project at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. between Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

The Veterans History Project is a permanent national archive of video and audio tape interviews with U.S. veterans, as well as collections of original documents such as wartime letters.

"Every one of us knows veterans – they could be neighbors, friends, or members of our families. Particularly as we gather together for the holidays, we should take the time to record the recollections and experiences of those who have served so we have a resource, not only for our families and communities, but for historians who will look for these first-hand accounts to understand military service during our time,” Emerson said. “I’m enraptured by the stories our veterans have of their service. Even if they are reluctant to talk about their own heroism, they can often relate the heroism of those who served with them. Every account is valuable, and all of them deserve a place in our national library."

Specifically, Emerson will reach out to schools and veterans organizations as well as the general public to conduct videos and bring them to the congressional office. The congresswoman will then deliver those materials to the Library of Congress on behalf of her constituents.

"The Veterans History Project offers us a unique opportunity to preserve the history of Americans who have worn the uniform of our country,” Emerson said. “I want to be very sure Southern Missouri is well-represented in this project, so I am charging my office with the duty of becoming a collection point for the submissions of Eighth District residents."

The three Missouri offices of the Eighth Congressional District in Cape Girardeau, Farmington and Rolla will be accepting submissions for the Veterans History Project. Each submission must include a form that can be obtained by calling Emerson’s district office or visiting http://www.house.gov/emerson.

All submissions can be dropped off or mailed to U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson at the contact information for any of the offices below:
