Washington, DC -- WASHINGTON –Congressman Kevin McCarthy issued the following statement after voting against the House Democrat leadership’s attempt to override the President’s veto of a security supplemental funding bill containing a timeline for withdrawal and restrictions on our troops:

 “Twelve weeks ago, the President requested a security supplemental spending bill that would provide our brave men and women in uniform with the resources they need. Instead, the Congressional Democrat leadership sent the President a bill that places too high an emphasis on political objectives by allowing Washington politicians to micromanage our military commanders on the ground. Additionally, the bill irresponsibly telegraphs our strategy to the enemy by mandating a deadline for withdrawal and contains billions of dollars in extraneous spending that has nothing to do with supporting our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Extraneous spending, even if necessary, should be debated and passed on its own merit. I strongly opposed this approach by voting to sustain the President’s veto.

“Time is running short and Congress needs to do what is right by passing a clean bill that provides our generals and soldiers the resources they need to succeed. We need to put politics aside and give our troops the equipment, the training and protection they need to prevail. Our troops and their families deserve better and I will continue to urge Congress to act and pass a clean security supplemental funding bill.”
