U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, D-Ill., announced Thursday that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $2 million grant to construct a new terminal facility and acquire land for approaches at Greater Peoria Regional Airport.

Passenger air service for the Galesburg area is provided by the Peoria airport and by Quad City International Airport in Moline.

"Illinois airports are vital arteries that support our economy and national defense," said Durbin. "I am happy to support the Peoria Airport Authority in their effort to serve travelers safely and efficiently."

Improvements to the airport, while creating a safer and more secure environment for users, will allow for the expansion and creation of jobs throughout the region. The total project cost is estimated at $64.8 million. Funding announced Thursday will be used to move forward with construction of a new passenger terminal facility to replace the current one, which was built in 1950.
