New Law Will Protect Great Lakes from Threat of Water Diversion

WASHINGTON —U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) today made the following statement regarding President Bush signing the Great Lakes Compact resolution into law.

“I am very pleased that President Bush has signed the Great Lakes Compact into law, which will help restore and protect one of our most precious resources. The future of Michigan is directly linked to the future of the Great Lakes.

“The Great Lakes are a part of our way of life – where we vacation with our families, where we boat and swim, and where we fish and hunt. They are also a critical part of the Michigan economy, bringing millions of tourism dollars to our state and creating jobs.

“This new law will help keep our Great Lakes safe from the dangers of water diversion, make conservation a priority and help preserve these treasured resources for future generations.”
