Examples of Representative Cubin’s Wyoming Environment Friendly Actions

The following are examples of actions taken by Representative Cubin during her Congressional tenure to help protect Wyoming’s natural resources, preserve public lands, and improve the enjoyment and access of these special places by Wyoming’s citizens:
  • Introduced, ushered through the House, and secured in public law during the 110 th Congress legislation to authorize the Secretary of the Interior to accept the donation of 50 acres of sensitive wildlife habitat and scenic views to be included in the Grand Teton National Park (GTNP).
  • Helped secure $700,000 in Fiscal Year 2007 funds for the North Platte River Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA).  These funds allowed the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to acquire a portion of a critical tract of the North Platte located below Gray Reef, known as the Van Rensselaer tract.  Through this acquisition, the BLM will conserve over one mile of sensitive riparian habitat along the North Platte River and expand fishing and recreational opportunities for the public.
  • Enacted into law legislation transferring ownership of Ranch A in northeast Wyoming near Beulah to the federal government.  Site is now a source for wildlife research, a learning center for students and a historical landmark.
  • Introduced and passed into law the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center Act to authorize the center in Casper.  Later secured over $5 million in matching funds to construct the center.
  • Secured a project request in Fiscal Year 2004 in the Transportation Appropriations bill for $4 million to the Grand Teton Pathway and Intermodal Facility This funding was used to create a 25-mile bike and foot path from Jackson to Jenny Lake for a safe transportation choice for bikers and pedestrians.
  • Secured in law the reauthorization of the Upper Colorado and San Juan Basin Endangered Fish Recovery Implementation Programs Reauthorization Act.  This measure would amend existing law to authorize the Bureau of Reclamation to provide continued cost-sharing and support for the endangered fish recovery implementation programs for the Upper Colorado River and San Juan River basins, home to four endangered fish species.
  • Continues to push for federal funding for the National Park Service to purchase a 35-acre tract of private land from a willing seller at the base of the dramatic Teton Mountain Range near Teton Village, Wyoming.  This property has important wildlife and scenic values, and is a key part of one of the only unprotected properties within Grand Teton National Park. Such an acquisition will complement the NPS’s investment in the acquisition of two adjacent properties Rep. Cubin supported in Fiscal Year 2000 and Fiscal Year 2002.
  • Requested $4.2 million for Fiscal Year 2009, to help complete the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail.  When Congress designated the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDT) in 1978, it made a promise to build and protect a conservation legacy for the American people.  The CDT provides access to some of America’s most spectacular landscapes while preserving and protecting numerous cultural, historic, and scenic landmarks along the way.

Representative Cubin’s Actions To Support Responsible Public Lands Management

  • Submitted written requests to both the President and Congressional Appropriators to increase funding for the National Park Service to address the maintenance backlog in our national parks for several years.
  • Co-sponsored and supported House passage of legislation promoting the quick recovery of destroyed forest lands by allowing our public land managers the ability to more efficiently respond to restoration needs in our national forests following a natural disaster.
  • Supported, and in some cases helped enact into law, several pieces of legislation to assist our local weed and pest coordinators in controlling outbreaks of invasive weeds on public and private lands in the west.  Such invasive weed control is essential to protecting native wildlife habitat and conserving Wyoming’s natural resources.
