  • FY09 Budget Priorities

As your member of Congress, I am dedicated to ensuring your priorities are addressed in the final budget. Over the last seven years, this administration has turned a projected $5.6 trillion surplus into a $2.4 trillion deficit and added $3.5 trillion to the national debt. The administration's proposed budget for the 2009 fiscal year is not only fiscally irresponsible, but it fails to address the daily struggles of most Americans.

  • Global Warming

A February 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report concluded that warming of the climate system is unequivocal. It also states that most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in greenhouse gas concentrations. Continued uncontrolled emissions of greenhouse gases will threaten local and regional food supplies, intensify precipitation cycles causing more floods and droughts, reduce the biological diversity of our planet and increase sea levels.

  • Immigration

The United States is a proud nation of immigrants. And, as the generations who came before, the most recent newcomers want what all Americans want: to raise strong families, build safe communities, to practice their faith in freedom and to seek new and better opportunities for their children.

  • Impeachment

As you may know, Congressman Dennis Kucinich has introduced House Resolution 333 which sets forth articles for the impeachment of Vice President Cheney on grounds of High Crimes and Misdemeanors and that these actions have compromised the national security of the United States. The Framers of our Constitution considered the rule of law to be critical to the maintenance of order and to the safekeeping of civil liberties. As such, the Constitution stipulates that both private citizens and government officials are subject to the supremacy of law.

  • Iraq

I strongly support our country's brave men and women's efforts to defeat international terrorism. However, I did not agree with President Bush that military confrontation with Iraq should be a priority over several other aspects of the war on terrorism, such as capturing Osama bin Laden and debilitating the leadership of al-Qaeda. I have always believed that the United States had not exhausted all of its diplomatic options, and for this reason I voted to oppose House legislation that would give President Bush the authorization to use pre-emptive military force against Iraq.

  • Medicare

It is clear that the rising cost of prescription drugs is one of the main reasons for the increase in our seniors' health care expenses. I also agree with you that this situation must be immediately addressed so that seniors do not continue to worry about financing their prescription drugs and can focus their time and energy on staying healthy.

  • Open Letter to My Constituents

Dear Constituent: Today, I was again faced with the very difficult decision of voting for a financial rescue plan that commits our taxpayer dollars to stabilizing the economy, protecting the average American's savings and retirement plan, and ensuring liquidity on Main Street.

  • Public Education

As your Representative in Congress, I have worked consistently to improve and increase funding for public education and new school construction. Research has demonstrated that reducing class size, particularly in the early grades, leads to improved student achievement. I consider the allocation of funding for this goal to be a substantial victory for our children and our community. It is also essential that, as the No Child Left Behind Act comes up for reauthorization, Congress is committed to fully funding this legislation that our schools and educational programs are equipped with the resources they need to provide the highest quality education for our children.
