(AP) WASHINGTON The U.S. Senate has approved an amendment by Minnesota Republican Norm Coleman to protect whistleblowers at the United Nations.
Coleman's amendment would require the U.N.'s anti-poverty agency to institute a whistleblower protection policy before U.S. funding to the agency can be disbursed. It's part of a bill that passed 81-12 Thursday night.
Two former employees of the U.N. Development Program are seeking whistleblower protection from the U.N. Ethics Office, claiming they were fired in retaliation for raising complaints to their superiors.
The UNDP contends it's not covered by the Ethics Office.
Coleman said the Ethics Office's lack of jurisdiction over the agency has had a chilling effect on its employees and their willingness to expose wrongdoing.
