Statement From Senator Harkin After Visiting Iowa Communities Hit By Severe Weather

US Senator Tom Harkin released the following statement today after touring communities in northeast Iowa that were ravaged by tornadoes:

"The devastation caused by the severe weather that hit numerous towns in Iowa last night is almost unbelievable. These communities withstood the brunt of one of the worst tornadoes our state has ever seen. My heart goes out to the families who lost a loved one in the storms. Others are facing homelessness and the loss of their livelihoods. The Iowans I met with today are facing these life-changing events with great courage. Our state and local officials have also risen to the challenge and I am positive their quick work saved lives last night. My staff and I will work diligently to ensure those affected by today’s storms receive the federal resources they need to rebuild their lives and their communities."

Harkin added that he will ask FEMA to expedite disaster relief for communities of northeast Iowa affected by yesterday’s storms. Iowans with questions about how the federal government can help should call Beth Freeman in Harkin’s Cedar Rapids office at 319-365-4504.
