Congressman Miller honors Greensboro Bicentennial on the floor of the US House of Representatives

Medals Presentation Congressman Miller is pleased to honor the men and women who have served our country. The Congressman’s district offices will assist members of the U.S. Armed Forces who are eligible for medals and don’t receive them. Rep. Miller has awarded medals to several constituents in the 13th District, including Spencer Joseph and Billy P. Sutton in Guilford County.

The Congressman presented the National Defense Service Medal and Medal for Good Conduct to Spencer Joseph for his service in the Marines. Additionally, he presented the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Good Conduct Medal Army, Army Occupation Medal, and National Defense Service Medal to Billy Sutton, Jr. who served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953-1974.

“Presenting medals to the deserving men and woman who have served our country is one of my favorite duties,” said Rep. Miller.

Darfur Visit After a Congressional Delegation trip to Darfur, Congressman Miller visited the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the Temple Emanuel, and African Services Coalition (offers support services to African refugees in the Triad) to discuss the atrocities in the region.

The Congressman’s trip to Darfur allowed him to see first-hand the struggles of the people in the Sudan. At UNC-G, he briefed students on the violence in Darfur and spoke about ways the United States should be involved in the conflict. Speaking at Temple Emanuel gave Mr. Miller the opportunity to express his moral outrage at the genocide and the world’s lack of response. He talked about the Holocaust and expressed his appreciation for the Jewish community’s involvement in trying to raise awareness about what is happening in the Sudan.

A summary of Congressman Miller’s remarks:

“I returned from the Sudan even more convinced that we must not waiver in our effort to end the genocide in Darfur… The Bashir regime has forfeited their sovereignty, their claim to sovereignty, by committing genocide, by sponsoring genocide against their own people. In the last 4 years, 400,000 to 450,000 people have been killed in Darfur; 2.5 million people have abandoned their homes to seek refuge from the violence; 4 million rely on food assistance… Sixty years ago, as the enormity of the Holocaust sank in, humanity promised never again. But the world has let genocide happen again and again, most recently in Rwanda. Kofi Annan, then-Secretary General of the United Nations, admitted that the world failed the people of Rwanda. I refuse to fail the people of the Sudan, of Darfur, as we failed the people of Rwanda. I am determined to keep the promise of 60 years ago. Never again.”

Listening Tours -Rep. Miller visited the University of North Carolina at Greensboro after receiving $6.6 million for research in the TRIAD Center. The TRIAD Center's goal is to find ways to intervene in the major health disparities of African Americans, Hispanics, rural and low-income children and adults in central North America. Rep. Miller heard from professors and staff concerned with improving the health of minorities in the Triad Area. Research areas ranged from healthy eating to decreasing the amount of overweight children.
