(Jacksonville, FL)
– Today in Jacksonville, the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation from HHS, Mr. Ben Sasse, announced that Jacksonville was one of 12 cities selected to be a part of a five year demonstration project that will recruit and encourage primary care physicians to begin using electronic health records (EHR).

Jacksonville was chosen from a list of more than 30 communities that entered a competitive selection process.  Applicant communities had to demonstrate their desire and ability to foster a community wide movement toward adopting the EHR process.

Congressman Ander Crenshaw said, “I am so proud of our community and this selection further reflects the tremendous commitment to service and quality that our health provider community has in Northeast Florida.  Jacksonville will certainly demonstrate the effectiveness of this new technology for the entire nation.”

The program was designed and implemented as a crucial first step toward the Bush Administration’s goal of providing Americans with a secure and functional electronic health record by 2014.  The use of EHRs will radically improve the quality of health care information management, lower the cost of healthcare by streamlining the process of recording information, and will lead to fewer mistakes thus producing greater patient satisfaction.

As a part of the new program, as many as 1,200 physician practices nationwide will receive financial incentives for their certified use of EHRs.

“Today is a big step forward for healthcare in America, and I am pleased that Jacksonville has been recognized as a leader in that advancement,” added Crenshaw.

Other selected communities include:  Alabama; Delaware; Georgia; Maine; Louisiana; Maryland/Washington, DC; Oklahoma; Pittsburgh, PA; South Dakota; Virginia; and Madison, WI.
