House Approves Agriculture Spending Bill With Hundreds of Earmarks

Despite the public's disapproval of pork barrel spending, the U.S. House passed an Agriculture spending bill weighed down by hundreds of earmarks.

Rep. Jeff Flake, an Arizona Republican and a foe of pork-barrel spending, offered a number of unsuccessful amendments during Tuesday's debate in an attempt to curb earmarks such as $180,000 for research on hydroponic tomato farming. In a speech on the House floor, Mr. Flake said the agriculture measure contained more than 400 earmarked projects. Read about the hundreds of piggy projects here.
