Grants to help preservation of two sites

Providence Journal (Rhode Island)

December 10, 2008

The preservation of two historic sites — Slater Mill in Pawtucket and Channing Memorial Church in Newport — got a boost with the recent announcement that each had been awarded substantial federal grants.

The grants from the Save America’s Treasures program amounted to $300,000 for Slater Mill, the first water-powered cotton spinning mill in America and the so-called birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, and $440,000 for Channing Memorial, the 128-year-old church named after William Ellery Channing, a Newport native and founder of Unitarianism in America.

The grants, announced by U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, were awarded through a competitive process and require a dollar-for-dollar match.

The money for Slater Mill will pay for repairs to prevent damage from fires, flooding and decay. The grant for the church will be used to refurbish its 130-foot American Gothic Revival style stone steeple, which houses a rare nine-bell chime.

The grants are administered by the National Park Service.

“I am pleased to have helped secure federal funding to preserve our state’s history and put people to work repairing these landmarks,” Reed, a member of Appropriations Committee, said in a statement. “This public-private partnership brings people together to preserve and protect our state’s unique cultural heritage.”
