Pedestrian bridge gets $440,000 federal grant

Times Herald-Record (New York)

December 10, 2008

HIGHLAND — Congressman Maurice Hinchey, D-Hurley, has secured a $440,000 federal grant to transform the historic Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge into the Walkway Over the Hudson – a pedestrian bridge spanning the Hudson River.

Hinchey said the funds would be used with other monies, including $874,000 obtained in 2005, to pay for upgrades to the overpass. The funds for the bridge, which will play a central role in next year’s quadricentennial celebration of Henry Hudson’s exploration of the river that now bears his name, come from the National Park Service’s Save America’s Treasures grant program.

The project will yield a 1.25-mile trail spanning the Hudson River that will link over 30 miles of trail systems. The bridge is slated to open to the public in the fall of 2009.
