Congressman Sander Levin

Social Security

Return to Issues

For more than 70 years, Social Security has been the foundation of a secure retirement in the United States. Social Security is the only universal, portable, defined benefit system for American workers, and it is a program I strongly support. It is vital to preserve and strengthen Social Security, both for today's retirees and tomorrow's.

I believe that the Social Security privatization proposals advanced by President Bush would not "strengthen and save" Social Security, as the President suggests; on the contrary, privatization would weaken and replace Social Security.

Although the American public overwhelmingly rejected privatizing Social Security when the President put it at the top of his domestic agenda in 2005 and 2006, the Bush Administration's 2008 budget called for $637 billion to pay for the cost of privatizing Social Security.

As a member of the Social Security Subcommittee in the House of Representatives, I will continue to fight to strengthen Social Security, address the challenges facing the program, and fight against privatization.
