Energy and the Environment

Return to Issues
As the United States begins the 21st Century, we have come to a crossroads on the related issues of energy and environmental protection. On the one hand, energy is the foundation of our nation's economy. Energy lights and heats our homes, fuels our cars, and powers our offices and industries. At the same time, we must take care not to sacrifice environmental quality for short-term gains.

From the opening days of the 110th Congress, the House of Representatives has made overhauling U.S. energy policy a top priority by approving the CLEAN Energy Act [H.R. 6] as part of our 100-hour agenda. The legislation reclaims billions of dollars of unjustified tax breaks and royalty holidays that have been bestowed on the oil industry in recent years and redeploys the funds to invest in clean, renewable energy sources and alternative fuels.

I am also working for federal policies to protect and restore our nation's water resources, especially the Great Lakes.
