Local Legacies

Return to Community

Local Legacies was a project designed to involve Americans nationwide in the celebration of the 200th birthday of the Library of Congress in 2000. Members of Congress were asked to submit 1-5 significant cultural tradition or historic event that is representative of their Congressional District in an effort to provide a grassroots snapshot of life in America at the turn of the century.
I was pleased to submit the following local "treasures":

Almost 1,300 Local Legacies projects from all 50 states were registered by Congress. Photographs, written reports, sound and video recordings, newspaper clippings, posters, and other materials from close to 1,000 Local Legacies projects have already been sent to the Library to become a permanent part of the collection of the American Folklife Center.
