harkin announces more than $260,000 for improvements to criminal record check systems

Washington, D.C.- Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) announced today that the Iowa Department of Public Safety will receive a $267,285 grant from the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the 2008 National Criminal History Improvement Program.  This funding will be used to audit the computerized history records maintained by the state to assess the accuracy and quality of criminal history files.

“Ensuring criminal history records are current increases public safety,” said Harkin.  “If law enforcement has to check records, it is critical that these files are in a central location and up-to-date.”

Specifically, this funding will be used to enhance the quality, completeness and accessibility of criminal history record information and implement the nationwide criminal justice and non-criminal background check systems.
