harkin announces $200,000 for the iowa coalition against sexual assault

Washington, D. C. – U. S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault has received $200,000 from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to better serve Iowans through the Rural Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking Assistance Program.  Harkin, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Panel that funds the DOJ’s Office on Violence Against Women designated the Iowa Coalition as the recipient of these dollars in the FY 2008 comprehensive funding package.

“I am pleased that Iowa will receive funds to support victims of domestic violence,” Harkin said. “Violence against women and children remains a major problem, but with this survivor-centered approach we can help these individuals get the support they need to overcome these terrible acts.”

Specifically, these funds will be used by the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) Technical Assistance Program to implement the Enhancing Rural Sexual Assault Services.  The program will use the money to define the needs of sexual assault services in rural communities, address the barriers to accessing quality service for survivors of sexual assault, develop common sexual assault services and provide training.
