Lampson Organizes Arrival Of Mobile Communications Unit To Ellington Field

STAFFORD, TX (September 16, 2008) - U.S. Rep. Nick Lampson, D-Stafford, announced the arrival today of a mobile Regional Congressional office that will provide much needed internet and phone connectivity to residents in Hurricane Ike’s path who are still without power. Residents will be able to report claims of hurricane damage with FEMA, and begin the process of receiving funds to repair damage. Many people across the area experienced extensive damage, and are still without the power needed to begin processing their claims.

Rep. Lampson requested the aid of the Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Program before Ike devastated the region on September 12, 2008. The unit who staffs the House Emergency Response Communication (HERC) truck pre-positioned themselves just outside of Ike’s path to be ready to respond as efficiently as possible. The truck will arrive today at Ellington field, and will provide 200 laptop computers with internet connectivity and 200 cell phones.

Many victims of Hurricane IKE are currently being told to call or go online to register claims, but this is impossible for many because power is not available. Some estimates indicate that it could be up to three weeks before the Houston area regains full power. The presence of the CAO’s mobile communications truck will allow residents to begin making claims despite not having power.

“The people of Southeast Texas are anxious to begin the process of rebuilding and resuming a normal life,” said Rep. Lampson “I am glad to see that residents will be able to begin the FEMA claims process with the help of a professional staff who will be available to help them navigate their claim.”

Members of Rep. Lampson’s staff will be available at Ellington Field to answer questions regarding the FEMA claims process. The mobile communications unit will arrive today, but will not be open for public use until tomorrow. Residents should have all relevant insurance information, including the type of damage, together before arriving at Ellington Field to begin the claims process. Claims can be made online by visiting www.fema.gov/assistance or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA.
