Senator Patty Murray Statement on Obstruction of Climate Change Legislation in U.S. Senate

For Immediate Release:
Friday, June 6, 2008

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement after the Boxer-Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act of 2008 was blocked in the U.S. Senate. The vote on the bill was 48-36. The legislation required 60 votes to move forward.

"It’s unfortunate that when we attempted to address one of the most difficult challenges facing our country, Republicans again chose to play political games and block us from making progress. This global warming bill was not perfect, but the American people expect us to take on big problems, to work together, and to find solutions for our future. Senate Republicans have chosen time and again to ignore the wishes of the American people and put obstruction and the status quo ahead of change and progress.

"I remain committed to passing climate change legislation that will bring about real, achievable reductions in greenhouse gases.  We owe that much to our children, our grandchildren, and our planet."
