How a Bill Becomes a Law
Target Age Group: 6-8th grade students

Project Duration: 2 days

Objective: Help students learn which Representatives also served as U.S. Presidents.

Materials: To complete this worksheet, students should refer to the Presidents page of the Kids In the House, Time Traveler section. We suggest that you print the Presidents page and have the students study it. The following day, print this worksheet for students to complete in class.

John Quincy Adams

1) In 1816 he moved with his parents to Little Pigeon Creek, Indiana, where he periodically attended a log-cabin school. He was also self-taught.

He served in the State House for four consecutive terms and practiced law during this time.

He was shot by an assassin in Washington, D.C., on April 14, 1865, and died the following day.

Franklin Pierce

2) He was one of the first volunteers in the War of 1812 and served in the defense of Baltimore.

He served his State House and then was elected to the 17th to 21st Congresses.

After serving as President, he retired to his home, Wheatland, near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he died June 1, 1868.

Abraham Lincoln

3) He served in the Virginia State House of Delegates and as governor of Virginia. He also served as a Senator, as Vice President, and as President.

He was first elected to the House as a Republican and served in the 14th to 16th Congresses.

He was elected Vice President of the United States on the Whig ticket with William Henry Harrison and became President when Harrison died.

James K. Polk

4) He served in the Mexican War as a colonel and a brigadier general and was president of the New Hampshire State Constitutional Convention in 1850.

He was elected as a Democrat to the House for the 23rd to 25th Congresses. He was later elected to the Senate, where he served in the 26th to 28th Congresses.

Andrew Johnson

5) Reared on a farm, he was largely self-taught and was apprenticed to a clothier. He later taught school in Buffalo, New York, while studying law.

He was elected as a Whig to the 23rd Congress and later to the 25th to 27th Congresses.

He became President upon the death of President Taylor and served from July 10, 1850, to March 3, 1853.

John Tyler

6) He is the only Member to have served in the House of Representatives after having served as President of the United States.

He was called Old Man Eloquent because of his great speaking ability.

James Buchanan

7) He served as Speaker of the House during the 24th and 25th Congresses.

He left the House to serve as governor of Tennessee from 1839 to 1841.

In 1844 he was elected as a Democrat as President of the United States.

Millard Fillmore

8) He was elected as a Democrat to the 28th to 32nd Congresses and later served as governor of Tennessee from 1853 to 1857.

As President he encountered many differences with Congress. Consequently, a resolution for his impeachment passed the House of Representatives on February 24, 1868.
