  DAIRY PRICE SUPPORT

The dairy price support program is an ongoing program in which the government maintains an offer to purchase dairy products when the price falls below a certain level. Cheese, butter and non-fat dry milk are purchased when the price falls below the support level. The purpose of the program is to remove surplus product from the market during periods of low milk prices and help prices recover. Currently, the government has more than one billion pounds of non-fat dry milk in federal government storage.

I strongly support the innovative use of the government's stored commodities in national nutrition and disaster relief programs. The dairy price supports program can serve dual goals of protecting American farmers and fighting hunger. Through the appropriations process, I have worked to reauthorize and sufficiently fund this important program.
