INFORMATION FOR WISCONSIN RESIDENTS AFFECTED BY FLOODING

Senator Herb Kohl

Wisconsin residents affected by the massive flooding and storms are encouraged to seek relief services provided by local and state authorities as well as by the American Red Cross. The organization has set up more than six shelters throughout the state in areas affected most for residents whose homes and dwellings have been severely damaged. Shelters have been opened in Columbus, Gays Mills/Soldiers Grove, Spring Green, La Farge, Ontario, Viroqua, Reedsburg, Richland Center, Elroy, Madison, Avoca and Racine, but are subject to change location and hours of availability based on need and external conditions. My staff is also available to provide assistance or direct affected residents to the appropriate authorities or agencies that can help.

Those needing immediate assistance should call my office and speak with staff member José León, who may be reached by calling (608) 264-5338 or (800) 247-5645.

For information on finding the nearest Red Cross shelter and facility for relief or emergency lodging, please call 1-866-GET-INFO (1-866-438-4636).

Disaster Welfare Inquiries

Local residents affected by the storms are encouraged to use the Red Cross' Safe and Well service to stay in touch with family and friends. People outside the disaster area who are trying to locate loved ones in affected regions may do so by visiting the Safe and Well Web site. The site may be accessed by visiting the Red Cross or Safe and Well. The Safe and Well service may also be accessed by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-27677).

Road Closings

The flooding has affected access to roads and highways throughout the state. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Web site has up-to-date maps and information on road closures for Interstate and major state highways.

Affected Wisconsin residents living in counties declared federal disasters may begin the process of applying for federal assistance by calling officials at FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), or 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing impaired. Residents may also go online and visit FEMA's Web site to register for recovery assistance.
