Levin Statement on DOE Decision to Build Rare Isotope Accelerator at MSU

WASHINGTON – Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., made the following statement today regarding the Department of Energy’s decision to build a Facility on Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State:

“A massive effort to highlight Michigan State University’s unique capability paid off for MSU, Michigan, and the nation. At a moment in our history when Michigan needs signs of hope, today’s decision by the Department of Energy to build the Facility on Rare Isotope Beams at MSU fills the bill. It is the best news for Michigan in a long time.

“I want to congratulate MSU President Simon and her entire team for their tremendous accomplishment in winning the competition to bring this facility to Michigan. This will be a $550 million investment from the U.S. Department of Energy that will spur $1 billion in economic activity – but those numbers barely convey what an outstanding development this is for Michigan’s future. DOE estimates that the facility is expected to provide research opportunities for an international community of approximately 1000 university and laboratory scientists, postdoctoral associates, and graduate students.

“The Facility on Rare Isotope Beams will lead to amazing new educational opportunities at Michigan State University. Isotope research offers the possibility for major scientific breakthroughs with potential for commercial spinoffs in areas like advanced medical technologies that hold enormous promise for improving lives and fueling economic growth.”
