DeMint Statement on California Court Overturning Ban on Gay Marriage

May 15, 2008 - Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) made the following statement:

“Marriage is America’s most important institution and it must be cherished and protected. This decision by the California State Supreme Court to overturn the ban on same-sex marriage is the latest in a series of attacks on the sanctity of marriage in this country,” said Senator DeMint. “We cannot allow activist judges to force their liberal views on American families that overwhelmingly support marriage between one man and one woman. Families are the strength of America, and that's why we must protect marriage because we know children that are raised by a mother and father have the best chance to succeed in life."

"My hope is that California voters have a chance to remedy this act of judicial tyranny with a constitutional amendment. Furthermore, the actions today by a handful of elitist liberal judges in California reinforces the need for members of the Senate to confirm judges who respect our rule of law and the constitution of the United States.”
