Representative Miller Responds to Report From Commission on Skills of American Workforce

Thursday, December 14, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Representative George Miller (D-CA), the Chairman-Designate of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, issued the following statement today in response to a new report from the Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce that offers recommendations for keeping the U.S. economy competitive.

“The new report from the Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce offers an important assessment of the U.S. economy today. The report reaffirms the fact that America cannot afford a business-as-usual approach to education, job training, and economic policy if it wants to retain its leadership in an increasingly fierce global economy. House Democrats have long recognized this basic economic truth, and that’s why we unveiled our Innovation Agenda in 2005.

“The Commission’s report offers some recommendations – from providing a world class education to 3- and 4-year old students, to paying teachers based on performance, to offering free adult literacy classes for American workers – that deserve serious consideration by the Congress next year as we seek to preserve America’s global economic leadership and to strengthen America’s middle class. The Commission is right to conclude that much of this work should already have been accomplished. But if we take the task seriously, we are not too late to maintain our standard of living and our world leadership.”

On Tuesday, Miller announced that the focus for the Committee next year will be on strengthening America’s middle class. Miller said that strengthening the middle class will rely in large part on improving public education and boosting the competitiveness of our workforce.
