Congressman Crenshaw Reviews Plans to Implement Erosion Control Measures for Nassau County Beaches

October 26, 2006

(Fernandina Beach, FL) – Yesterday, Congressman Ander Crenshaw, Army Corps of Engineers officials, and several key local government officials reviewed plans for an erosion control project for the Nassau County shoreline at the project’s future site.

“The residents of Nassau County have waited entirely too long for this project to come to fruition,” said Congressman Crenshaw. “The beaches in Fernandina serve as an integral part of our local economic engine by providing a relaxed, beautiful escape for tourists from all over the country. Unfortunately, increased hurricane activity coupled with natural erosion has created massive washout and hazardous conditions. It is imperative that we begin this work soon before any irreconcilable damage is done.”

As a member of the Appropriations Committee, Congressman Crenshaw helped secure $6.5 million for this project in the House passed version of the Fiscal Year 2007 Energy and Water Appropriations Act. Additionally, Richard Bonner, Army Corps of Engineers Deputy District Engineer for Project Management, announced the completion of the General Reevaluation Report which brings the project one step closer to the construction phase. According to the Army Corps of Engineers, this project is expected to commence in November 2007.

The project will help reverse the negative effects of weather and erosion on Nassau County beaches. Heavy hurricane seasons in 2004 and 2005 further increased the need for this long overdue beach restoration project. The initial phase of the project will place approximately 2.4 million cubic yards of material along the beach and would be periodically renourished for the next 50 years.
