McCarthy Announces $2,887,489 in Grants for Local Housing Agencies

Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy today announced four local housing authorities in New York’s 4th Congressional District have been awarded a total of $2,887,489 in U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Capital Fund Program Formula Grants.

The following 4th District housing authorities received awards:

Town of Hempstead Housing Authority received $1,699,338
Village of Hempstead Housing Authority received $567,495
Freeport Housing Authority received $533,960
Rockville Centre Housing Authority received $53,161

“With Nassau County’s high cost of living and lack of undeveloped space, housing is at a premium,” McCarthy said.  “This grant will help create affordable and accessible housing opportunities for Long Island’s working families.”

The Capital Fund Program provides grant to public housing agencies (PHAs) for modernization, development, and management improvements.  The funds may not be used for luxury improvements, direct social services, costs funded by other programs, and ineligible activities as determined by HUD on a case-by-case basis.  Housing Authorities consult with local government officials and PHA residents as they plan for activities to be funded by the grant.

HUD will award approximately $2.5 billion in Capital Fund Program formula grants in 2005.
