Frequently Asked Questions About the Digital TV Transition

On February 17, 2009 television broadcasting will change from using analog signals to a new digital standard of signals. This transition will provide airwaves to firefighters and first responders so they can better communicate, as well as bring more viewing options and additional wireless services to consumers.

If your television receives programming over the air through “rabbit ears” or a rooftop antenna, you will need a special converter box to continue watching television. Each household can request up to two $40 coupons to go toward the costs of certain converter boxes. Please note that coupons cannot be combined.

The NTIA recently announced a list of certified retailers who will offer coupon-eligible converter boxes including Best Buy, Circuit City, RadioShack and Wal-Mart.

For television sets connected to a cable or satellite service, or with a digital tuner built-in, no additional equipment should be needed.

Please visit this website for regular updates, read through these frequently asked questions and visit the following websites for more information:

The Federal Communications Commission’s DTV Website.

National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s Website on Converter Coupons.

Please Note: As of November 3, 2008, consumers are able to receive coupons at PO Boxes should they choose to do so. Consumers wishing to use a PO Box are required to provide home address information, as well as a valid PO Box delivery address.

If you would like to use a Post Office Box to receive mail, please reapply at www.dtv2009.gov, noting both your home and mail delivery address.
