Senator Carper was at Angola by the Bay on August 29. 2008 with the USDA to announce funds made available by the 2008 Farm Bill to extend the central sewer to more than 1,500 homes.

Senator Carper helped present a check to the Law Office of Karen Y. Vicks, which specializes in Social Security Administration claims for individuals with disabilities and veterans. This opportunity was made possible with assistance from the Small Business Administration and Wilmington Trust. Wilmington Trust financed a $50,000 SBA Express loan to Karen Vicks to launch her new office. Ms. Vicks utilized the services of the Dover Small Business Development Center, SBA's counseling resource partner.

Senator Carper was at the official opening of the Harrington Truck Route. In August 2005, Senator Carper announced $8.5 million in federal money to build an alternative truck route in Harrington and the project is finally complete.

Senator Carper hosted a press conference at Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in New Castle County to discuss how air pollution creates health problems for Delaware's children. Senator Carper joined four lending agencies as they addressed a group of senior citizens at the Laurel Senior Center to highlight the American Housing Rescue and Foreclosure Prevention Act of 2008, a measure Senator Carper had a hand in crafting. The new housing legislation will give older Americans access to the Federal Housing Administration's Home Equity Conversion Mortgage program.

Senator Carper visited MainStay Suites, the first hotel in Kent County to be certified under the Delaware Hotel Industry's "Green Hotels" initiative, to learn how being "green" makes a difference, on August 15, 2008. Owner Bob Hartly showed the senator that all rooms have kitchenettes and the staff takes a moment to show off the energy-efficient washers and dryers.
