Statement by U.S. Senator Murray on the Earthquake in Spokane

For Immediate Release:
Monday, June 25, 2001

For the second time in less than four months, we're reminded the Northwest is earthquake country. I am grateful that so far no fatalities or injuries have been reported, and that damage to homes and businesses appears to be minimal.

The recent Nisqually and Spokane earthquakes have reinforced to me how important disaster planning is to our communities. The federal government needs to be a good partner as states and local governments plan for natural disasters -- whether it's earthquakes, hurricanes, floods or droughts.

In the short-term, I will continue to stay in touch with the local community as they assess whether there are any injuries or damage. In the long-term, I remain committed to working with local communities as they prepare and mitigate for future natural disasters.
