Issues Veterans Health Care
VA Facilities
Our country can never fully repay veterans
for the sacrifices they have made for our nation, but we must
do all we can to ensure veterans have access to top-quality
health facilities.
In Wisconsin, I have strongly supported funding for and increased
access to VA health facilities around the state. I worked
for several years to establish new VA clinics in Rice Lake
and Hayward and personally spoke with then VA Secretary Jim
Nicholson to push for these clinics. I am pleased by the recent
opening of both clinics, which will provide primary and mental
health care services to 1,700 patients. Veterans in northwestern
Wisconsin are now able to receive the health care they deserve
without having to travel hundreds of miles.
I am also pleased at the recent announcement that the Milwaukee
VA Zablocki Medical Center will receive funding for a new
Spinal Cord Injury Unit. In March 2007, I joined Senator Herb
Kohl and Representative Gwen Moore in writing a letter to
VA Secretary Nicholson requesting that construction on the
new unit begin as soon as possible. I look forward to the
completion of this new facility.
