STEPHANIE HERSETH SANDLIN AND GEORGE MCGOVERN DEDICATE ‘ELEANOR MCGOVERN POST OFFICE BUILDING’ IN WOONSOCKET

Herseth Sandlin Bill Renames Post Office In Memory of Eleanor McGovern

October 31, 2008, Woonsocket, South Dakota –U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin and former U.S. Senator George McGovern today joined area officials to dedicate the renamed “Eleanor McGovern Post Office Building” in Woonsocket. The renaming honors Mrs. McGovern, a Woonsocket native, and is the result of H.R.2654, legislation introduced and passed by Rep. Herseth Sandlin in 2007.

Eleanor McGovern passed away in Mitchell on January 25, 2007 at age 85. She was a tireless advocate for children and families throughout her life, and dedicated herself to causes including the battles against alcoholism and hunger.

In 2006, Dakota Wesleyan University, Eleanor’s alma mater, launched The George and Eleanor McGovern Center for Leadership and Public Service, which offers a range of public service and leadership-centered programs for students, faculty, staff and the global community.

Today’s dedication ceremony takes place on the 65th anniversary of Eleanor and George’s wedding.

Rep. Herseth Sandlin said, “Throughout her life, Eleanor and George formed a true partnership of shared trust and responsibility.  George commonly referred to Eleanor as his ‘most helpful critic and most trusted advisor.’ I hope that this Post Office will provide a lasting reminder of her partnership with George, and the enduring contributions she made through her public service and her inspiration to others.”
