Auto Industry Bailout

Auto Industry Bailout

Recently, the House of Representatives voted on legislation (The Auto Industry Financing and Restructuring Act) to provide up to $14 billion in bridge loans to the “big three” U.S. automotive manufacturers. Although I was advised by the House Committee on Ethics and Standards that I had no ethical conflict under the rules relative to this provision, I believe that I do have a conflict.

A company which I control derives substantial income through real property leases to one of the auto companies that may receive loan guarantees under this bill. Therefore, I felt it would be improper for me to vote on or to engage in any debate or discussion on this bill. Accordingly, I voted “Present” on all 4 votes (Roll Call votes 687-690) related to H.R. 7321.
