Committee on Education and Labor - U.S. House of Representatives

Disability Policy

All Americans have the right to a good education, whether they have disabilities or not. The Committee on Education and Labor is working to ensure that students and individuals with disabilities have access to a quality education and employment and are given the opportunity to succeed.

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

Students with disabilities are being better educated than ever before. They are no longer legally excluded from school; instead, they are educated alongside their non-disabled peers in increasing numbers. The percentage of students with disabilities reaching academic proficiency is steadily increasing --more are graduating, attending post secondary options and entering the workforce. However, there is still room for improvement in raising expectations of what students with disabilities are able to accomplish. IDEA and related laws can help broaden their options.
